Aerosol fire extinguishers extinguish fires chemically and physically by breaking the chemical reaction chain that sustains the fire and by scavenging free radicals, such as hydrogen and hydroxyl molecules, which are essential for the continuation of the fire. This is done by removing free radicals from the combustion reaction by binding them to the aerosol particles. Aerosol fire extinguishers do not significantly reduce the oxygen level in the environment and therefore can be safely used in areas where people or other living things are present without posing a risk to them.
